Getting Crafty

Since the move to CA I've been struggling to find things to do when the boyfriend is busy as I still don't have a lot of friends here. It seems the older that I get, the harder it is to make friends outside of work. Let's face it - we spend on average 8 hours of our day at work and then the life outside of work. Doesn't leave much time to go out and troll for new friends. So I've been tapping into my creative side and wanted to share what I've been up to.

The first project I did, was for mother's day. My mom wanted a black shiny necklace that wasn't too long or too short. I googled black necklaces and found one that I could use for inspiration. This wasn't my first go around making jewelry as I used to make it all the time as a kid. Once I made up my mind to make the necklace, I realized that I had no tools. Like any hobby, you have to invest some money up front in order to get started. So $50 later and a brief in-store tutorial (i.e. me reading a $30 beading book I wasn't planning on buying), I was set to start my mom's necklace.

Overall, the necklace turned out beautiful despite the snags I faced. If you look at the inspiration picture and then compare it to the end product, they look similar, but completely different. Luckily, my mom loved it and my mother's day present was a success!

The second project I worked on, was for my boyfriend's co-worker's baby shower. He volunteered me for the job since apparently I'm crafty. He entrusted me with the dubious duty of making a diaper cake. I had never made a diaper cake previous to this one but I figured it couldn't be that hard. I consulted Pinterest for ideas and "how-to's" and then consulted with my BFF about the baby stats since she has 3 of her own and is kind of an expert when it comes down to it.

So last Saturday and $80 as my budget, I set off to buy the diaper cake materials in hopes of impressing my BF and his co-workers. Five hours and five stores later, I had all the materials I needed to make a 4-tier baby safari themed diaper cake. Here was my supply list:
  • Stuffed Animal for the topper (I got the giraffe & blanket combo from Ross)
  • 1 box (108 diapers) & 1 package of Pampers Swaddlers (40 diapers) size 1 (Wal-Mart)
  • 1 bag of rubber bands (Wal-Mart)
  • 2 spools of Giraffe print ribbon (Joann's)
  • 1 spool of blue ribbon
  • 1 dowel (Joann's)
  • 1 package of baby animal safari stickers (Joann's)
  • 1 package of cardboard letters (Joann's)
  • 1 pizza pan as the foundation (TJ Maxx)
  • Glue gun
Making the diaper cake was the easy part. It only took me a couple hours to make and this was the end result:

My mission to impress my BF and his co-workers = accomplished :)

Next diaper cake, I will take pictures and post a step-by-step tutorial for those of you interested in learning how to make a basic diaper cake.
